Mirka & Bret ::: Engaged!!! Half Moon Bay Engagement photography

I met up with Mirka & Bret in the tiny adorable town of Half Moon Bay to head out on our little adventure. When I arrived she was glowing with excitement and ready for her engagement session. It was the first time that I had met them and I knew right then that this shoot was going to be awesome. Mirka scouted out the locations for the shoot which were a photographers dream! Thanks Mirka!

At first both Mirka and Bret were a little reserved in the photos but once we got rolling they really let their connection shine thru. These guys were troopers and trusted me. When my clients trust me I am able to capture some really awesome photos.

The turning of a new year is always so refreshing to me. I love the idea of starting another year of memories, setting out on new adventures, striving to hit a new set of goals and the endless amount of opportunities that are waiting for us to find.

This year I will be setting monthly, weekly and daily goals along with achievements that I will work to obtain by the end of the year. Some are personal and some are for my business. Some are repeats from last year and some are brand new. However in all of my goals this year I am setting the mark a little higher to push myself a harder than last year. Otherwise I will stay on this plateau and not grow. I am excited to track my progress, which some will be here, and see what a little determination will bring.

I wish for you the strength and determination you need to reach all of your goals this year and the support that you need to make your dreams come true!

Amber & Jay ::: Married!!

Amber and Jay rented out a house on Lake Tahoe and invited forty of their closest friends to gather and celebrate their love for each other. The house was a perfect fit for an intimate gathering. Jay looked sharped and Amber was stunning. It was a beautiful day. Everything was exactly how they planned.

The group of friends and family that attended were such a tight group of people. It felt like everyone had known each other for years. I felt like I was hanging out at a house party that just happened to also have a wedding ceremony in the middle of it.

As night fell and the chill in the air had people heading indoors, the other wedding festivities began. Her father sat on a stool playing the guitar for Amber and Jay's had their first dance. All of the guests found a seat on a couch or chair and just watched. When the dance was finished a few other guests performed songs chosen just for this special occasion. I was blown away with the amount of very talented musicians that this little group held.

I drove away from this wedding with such a warm heart and thought to myself that this is exactly how I would want my wedding to be. All of my closest friends, true friends, along with my immediate family all gathered together to enjoy each others company. Not having to worry about the regular stress a wedding can hold. Just us and the people we love, making memories.

Katie & Jules ::: Just Because portraits

The bond between a mother and child at this young age is so beautiful. This shoot was to highlight just that, the bond between Katie and her little girl, Jules. Like most of my shoots, I place them in a desired location and I step away so they can enjoy each others company without a camera in their face and worrying about posing for me. Of course there are a few posed shots but for the most part to really capture the true connection between two people, I let them be and shoot from afar.

Katie brought props which turned out to be such a great idea. I must remember to suggest props to my other clients. Jules likes to play tea party and her favorite book to read with mom turned out to be a great prop too!

I walked away from this shoot being reminded that I LOVE what I do and that I really miss my mom.

This little munchkin just turned one is just as cute as can be. The Castillo family is so sweet and I loved working with them. Alicia chose the Santa Monica Pier because this is where Alex took her for their first date. Ten years later, he took her back there for another date however that time he asked her to marry him. So it was only natural that we did their first family portrait there as well.

Finn & Maximus' Birthday

This was such a wonderful birthday party for two adorable little guys.. Finn and Maximus celebrated their birthday party at Rustic Canyon park in the Pacific Palisades. This was a "green" party which meant that everything was recyclable or reusable. Their mommy's did such an amazing job with this. The signs were made of fabric and can be hung in the boy's room. The gift bags were reusable cloth snack bags. The cupcake stands were made of tree pieces and the table clothes were actual cloth. It gave the entire party a personal touch that you don't see at other parties.

My highlight of the entire day was the cupcakes. I must have had at least 5. Finn's Nana owns a lovely little bakery called Bliss Bakeshop in Mariposa. She came down for the celebration and made all of the little "Bliss Bites" from scratch the night prior and oh my they were to die for!! You must take a look at her site and see all the different flavors. This one was my favorite - * Jillybean’s Chocolate Coma * An incredible brownie cupcake covered with a raspberry glaze and then topped with a rich layer of deep chocolate ganache. A true chocolate lover’s bliss. Yup - YUMMY!!!

I am in love!!! This little guy has stole my heart with all his cuteness. I can hardly handle it! Everyone meet Griffin. These two are high school sweethearts and on their 7th anniversary they promised to love each other for the rest of their lives. Friends and family from all of the world came to celebrate at a beautiful estate in the rolling hills of Murrieta, California. The entire day was perfect in every way. From the weather to the cake to the ceremony to the reception, it was a perfect day.

Jennifer and Chris are so cute I want to put them in my pocket and keep them forever. Even on this day, their 7 year anniversary, they acted like their love was fresh and new. She is his queen and he adores every piece of her. Rest assured that he will never let anything happen to his love. For her there is no one else in the world. He is the sun in her sky. These two are so deeply in love that nothing will come in between them.

Misty showed up to her boudoir session with a ton of beautiful pieces that she designed and made herself but unfortunately we were racing the light of day and were not able to use all of the pieces. One of the things that I absolutely love about doing boudoir photography is that it brings out the goddess in everyone. Lex was no exception. She is such a sweet humble person that I thought that was how the shoot was going to go; sweet. Olivia celebrated her 1st birthday at the Kenneth Hahn State Park in Culver City. Such a beautiful location in the middle of a concrete jungle. If you have not been there, you must check it out for your next picnic.

Olivia and her loved ones gathered together to celebrate her first year of life. Again, I am blown away at the hard work that these mom's put into a party. Andrea made her birthday cake along with the giraffe friends and a ton of cupcakes. Way to go mom's!

Ilan tunrs 1!! Happy Birthday!!

A sweet little boy named Ilan turned one a few weeks ago. He was always in great spirits and wonderful to be around. He came into this world a little earlier than expected. Even though Ilan had a rough entrance into this life he is now healthy and strong. Ilan means tree and I think he is doing a great job of living up to his name. Family from all over extending to Brazil came to celebrate the first year of his precious life.

It was a beautiful afternoon in South El Monte at the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area. Ilan's very proud momma, Nancy went all out on the hand made decorations, cookies, treats and other goodies. I was impressed!

Just Because ::: Barbara

I am very pleased to share the photos from one of my most favorite photo shoots, Barbara. I met up with Barbara early one morning at her cottage home in Santa Monica. Zach, her grandson who lives in Costa Rica, wanted portraits of his grandma that he misses so much.

I had met Barbara on her 89th birthday in Costa Rica while photographing Zach and Tracy's wedding. This was her first time out of the country! What a great time and place to make that her first trip.

When I arrived, Barbara was ready to have her picture taken. She mentioned that she didn't like pictures of her looking at the camera because her eyes are now dark and she felt old. However she was willing to do anything that would make Zach happy.

She has a tiny cottage behind her daughters house that she has lived in for 25 years. The entire cottage was a story book, her story of 91 years. So many memories, tokens of the past and art. I loved it!! She is a painter as was her mother and her mothers mother I believe. From floor to ceiling were artifacts from her story.

Barbara was wonderful to work with and so sweet. She giggled the entire time which made me giggle. She invited me over for tea one day soon as long as it wasn't as early as the shoot was. Cute!!

Her sister made this doll for her and I believe that Barbara painted the painting in her lap.

The home was full of photos of her loved ones.

She has the cutest collection of chair's in her home.

After the portrait shoot was finished I took some time to photograph some of her things. While I was photographing the chairs, I noticed her watching me and thought it was really cute.

This wall is part of her cottage and has become a piece of art of sorts. Her kids and grandkids over the years have added little trinkets that are a part of them to the wall.

Barbara, I don't think that you're eyes are dark at all. I think that you're beautiful. You have a warm heart and a caring soul. It was a absolute gift to have spent the morning with you. Zach, you're a wonderful grandson!

Boudoir Goddess ::: Meg

Meg came to me nervous as could be and said that she would take part in my portfolio building shoot. I could tell that she was really excited but hesitant about all of it. When she came to the shoot I could sense the same energy from her. Once she had her makeup on and into the first outfit, which is always a more conservative one, she grabbed hold of that goddess within and rocked the photoshoot.

What I loved about Meg's shoot is that she brought lots of her man's clothes, without him knowing of course. I always encourage this but I think she really got the idea and ran with it. Meg brought his favorite hats, shirts, suspenders, headphones (he is a dj) and she also brought some things that he bought for her such as a t-shirt. Also included in her giant bag of outfits was somethings that she loved to wear that were not necessarily lingerie. Another great idea. What you wear doesn't have to be lingerie and it is still down right sexy. I think that if you're comfortable and excited about what you are wearing in a shoot then your true self will shine thru even more so.

I wanted to use this window somehow in the shoot. I asked Meg what she thought and she was all about climbing into it. Completely different than what I would usually do but I am so glad I did it. Look at the definition in her body.

Boudoir photography is my passion, or one of them at least. Every single woman I have photographed, no matter the shape or size has been sexy and they leave the shoot feeling that way. YOU are sexy. She is sexy. The lady next to you is sexy. All of US women are sexy. Because each and every one of us is a goddess.

It was great to work with Jenna. She was super fun, playful, beautiful and full of sexy energy. Plus she came in with a rolling duffel bag full of outfits, hats, shoes, belts and accessories. You've got to LOVE a girl that has tons of sexy outfits just lying around the house.

SAMM ::: Daily routine

Everyday I take a break from editing photos or returning emails to get my energy flowing again. I sometimes take Pixel for a walk or dance around but most times I hoop. I put on some dance music, grab my custom made hoop (thank you Keaton!) and give it all I've got for 30 minutes. It is a fantastic way to exercise and clear the mind. I have so much fun with it.

After my 30 minute hoop dance workout I stand on my head for about 5 minutes. Yup, I stand on my head almost everyday. There are so many great benefits of doing this that I should be doing it every single day for as long as I can and so should you. One that I just found out it that it can actually turn grey hair back to its natural color. Crazy huh? Something about blood vessels getting back up to the scalp. Let me tell you, I need that. lol. Some other benefits include balanced hormones, better circulation, increased brain function, digestive health, it tones your core muscles which supports Musculoskeletal system, helps the respiratory system and it reverses the aging system on your face. It is a natural face lit!

SAMM: Something about me Monday's

This is another day where I share a little about myself for you to get to know me a bit more.

When I was 25 I decided that it was time that I made one of my dreams come true: to graduate with a a college. I up and left my entire life in Hawaii and moved to Santa Barbara to go to the Brooks Institute of Photography. I arrived at the SB airport with 3 bags and not a clue of what was going to happen. My admissions adviser picked me up and took me to get registered and sort out details such as where I was going to live. Cut to a 6 hours later I was in my "dorm" room lying in my twin bed crying. "What have I done?!?!?!"

Being at the age I was I had a hard time going to school with a bunch of young adults that just graduated high school. My three girl roommates ranged in age from 17-19. Just imagine what it is like living with three girls that are finally out from under their parents grasp and exploring their new found life. College life. Is this really what I left my life for?

Two weeks in to my first class I was studying like mad for the test that was only a few minutes away. The test was on shutter speeds and apertures. So many numbers to remember! A girl sitting next to me looked at me and said 'Do you want a piece of gum from Canada? Its really strong." She became my college best friend just from that small little gesture. I seriously couldn't have got thru the first year of school with out Symoni. Some of my best memories are with her.

In three short-ish years it was time for me to iron my cap and gown and head to the theater where I was going to walk the line and get my diploma. I couldn't believe it. Usually I am terrified to be on stage but not this time. No ma'am. I earned it. I was proud of it. I was going to walk up there and get what I had been dreaming of for years. And I did.

It gives me a giggle to look back at this. My name is in Papyrus. The only font in the world that I loath. It should be deleted from existence.

Me momma. She is another person out a handful that helped me make this dream come true.

The second part of the dream was to become a full time photographer and here I am living another dream come true. Life is good to me.

Each day of the week, I have a topic to blog about. Today is Song Share Sunday's. Basically it is a day where I share something I like so you can have another peek in the window of getting to who is behind the lens.

This song is one of my absolute favorites. I sometimes play it first thing in the morning to get my energy going. It puts a smile on my face. The lyrics are great reminder. The beat gets the soul moving. The video might be a little creepy but I love it regardless. Kerli is also one of my favorite artist, check her out if you get a moment. She is unique and fun.

Stephanie & Dave ::: Married

Welcome back! Whew! That took a little longer than I had expected because I fell in love with so many of the photos from the wedding. I will consider that a good thing ;)

Stephanie and Dave met thru a friend a few years back. Dave lived in NY and Stephanie lived in Santa Monica. Their friend, Michelle Newman, insisted that they meet and one day when Stephanie was in NY they finally did. Stephanie returned home to California and on a gut feeling, Dave moved out to see if she was the one. Obviously his intuition was right.

Their ceremony was by far one of the most romantic ones I have attended. I cried several times, I mean gushing tears. Their Rabbi had them write letters about one another and promised that she would not read them during the ceremony, well she lied. The way that they talked about one another was so sweet. They adore and honor each other.

"He makes me want to be a better person"
"She is an angel on earth"
"He still buys me flowers"
"She makes me a better person"

The one that brought me to hide my tears behind my camera was that he started shopping for her ring one month after he had met her. After one month he knew she was the one. "All my life I thought that when I found the One that it was going to be an overwhelming feeling like being swept off of my feet. It wasn't like that. It was like I had been searching my entire life for my dream girl and I had finally found her. It was like a breath of fresh air" (Not exact but that is the message I took away from it.)

Stephanie's family is Korean and it is said that when two people get married it is not only the individuals joining as a couple but it is a marriage of both families as well. I was taken back by the openness and immediate connections that I witnessed. The Koh family wearing yarmulke's the ceremony. The Benson's learning speak Korean to welcome their new relatives. Dad Koh joining in on the Hora and the Benson's participating in the traditional Korean wedding ceremony, the Paebaek. It was a beautiful melody of both traditions and I am blessed to have been a part of it.

Text message from Dave "Let's get married!"

This is where the entire room started to cry.

They choose guests to recite their Jewish wedding blessings and Dave gave each one a thumbs up. Love everything about this photo.

The way that they look at each other is so sweet!!

Mr. & Mrs. Benson! Congratulations!!

The Paebaek Ceremony - The couple will bow deeply to the honorees, then kneel as one pours tea. Once each honoree drinks the tea, they impart wisdom, advice or a wish for the couple's future. Finally, the honorees will throw dates (symbolizing girls) and chestnuts (symbolizing boys) which the bride will try to catch in her skirt. According to legend, the number of dates and chestnuts caught signifies how many children she will bear.

They caught about 30 dates and chestnuts. Ha!

I absolutely love the photo above and below on the left. These two are so in love. I overheard him say to her as they first started the reception "Take a look around you and soak it all in. Remember this feeling. This is why we are having this day"

The bouquet toss is always one of my favorite shots. Look at these ladies going for it.

After the ceremony the Rabbi announced that if anyone wanted to be blessed or healed to have the bride and groom do so for them. On this day so much love, many blessings and positive energy is being sent to Stephanie and Dave that they have an abundance of it. All thru the night that is what they did - they blessed many people including me :)

You guys rock! Thank you again for such a wonderfully fun night.

Burns Family Portrait

Last week I took a trip to Calabasas to photograph the Burns family in their beautiful home. Stella and JR are such great little sports even tho Stella is a little shy. With family sessions there is always a good behavior prize or a bribe to help the toddlers get thru the photos. This bribe was that Stella could get anything she wanted from Barns and Nobel. I LOVE THAT. She could get anything she wanted from a book store! Awesome job Mike and The Kim.

The Burns family is full of dimples. "Show um if you've got um" Mike would say to get everyone to smile. Too cute! Mike and The Kim, you have made such a wonderful little family for yourselves and I am I happy that I was able to capture some great pictures of it.

Joplin & Mike are having a baby!!!

Last week I got together with Joplin and Mike to take her baby bump photos at their home in North Hollywood. When I asked her what was the feel of the photos that she wanted to go for she said "Nature-ish" and said that her house would be perfect. They have a country style home with a park near by both with so many trees. It didn't even feel like the valley. Ha!

We started the shoot in the living room with just Joplin. She was a bit nervous about the whole thing but as soon Mike was in the picture too she filled up with light. Talk about having your partner bring out the true you. You can feel thru the photos the love these two have for each other.

Airrow Sage will be her name and is due in September. We have a new born shoot planned that I am ecstatic about. I can not wait to meet her!! With two beautiful people as her parents she will be nothing short of wonderful herself.

Steamy..... this is how you guys got into this mess ;)

Pixel Wixel Lamb

One of my favorite things about being able to stay at home and set my own hours is the amount of time I get to spend with Pixel. We go for long walks and take play breaks. She keeps my lap warm while I edit photos and I will always have a lunch buddy. And the absolute best part is, nap time.

The Artist's Life

When I decided that I was going to make my dream of being a full time photographer become a reality, a very close friend of mine gave me a book to read - The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. It took me a while to get thru this book. Not because it was a tough read or that I wasn't interested but because of Resistance. Resistance is the enemy that keeps us from reaching our goals and dreams. Once I committed to reading this book, it set my motivation into gear. I was ready to take on my fears and concur my dreams.

Here is the final excerpt that really hit home to me.

The Artist's Life

Are you a born writer? Were you pit on this earth to be a painter, a scientist, an apostle of peace? In the end the question can only be answered by action.
Do it or don't do it.
It may help to think of it this way. If you were meant to cure cancer or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you dont do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself. You hurt your children. You hurt me. You hurt the planet.
You shame the angels who watch over you and you spire the Almighty, who created you and only you with your unique gifts, for the sole purpose of nudging the human race one millimeter farther along its path back to God.
Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It's a gift to the world and every being in it. Don't cheat us of you contribution. Give us what you've got.

Today is the fist day of the rest of my life. I am now a full time photographer and living my dream. It feels really good to be using my unique gift and sharing it with others.

Ariane & Koa ::: Married

On an absolutely perfect Waimea day, Ariane and Koa had their beautiful wedding. The breeze was cool. The sun was warm. The clouds were big and fluffy. Ariane was nothing but graceful in everything that she did. Koa was full of excitement to marry the woman of his dreams. And the two of them together had smiles from ear to ear until they drove off to their honeymoon.

There were some very memorable moments but my favorite moments were

Ariane bursting into laughter while trying to hold back tears.
The turkeys on the hillside prior to the first look.
Seeing the connection between friends and family at the reception.
The father daughter dance.
Seeing Rob (father of the bride) with a proud look on his face every time he looked at Ariane or his wife.
Jeremy holding and kissing Mandi's belly while they slow danced.

Ariane and Koa did a "first look" prior to the ceremony which gave us the opportunity to take our time with the photos instead of rushing through it to get to the next event. I had a blast working with them on all different ideas and locations. These two are troupers! There were so many awesome photos that I actually had a hard time narrowing it down to what I posted here. I love it when that happens!

Pure romance...

The honey is the best honey I have ever had. I was lucky and was given three jars... I might actually need more ;)

I always tear up at one point during a wedding and this one was no exception. Actually it happened to me three times. Ha! This is once.

This was the second moment that got me. Mom and Dad held each other in the background, kissed and cried while their little girl danced with her husband. Gah... it still gets me just thinking about it.

And then this was the third time tears welled up in my eyes. It was so sweet watching Jeremy love on the baby bump of his beautiful wife. Congratulations you two!!

This had to get blogged. What a priceless moment. This is the garter toss. Koa knew that his buddies wouldn't go for it willingly so he pinned a twenty dollar bill to it and it still didn't work!

Congratulations Ariane & Koa. You two truly are "Meant to Bee". Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to be a part of your special day.

Welcome to the world ::: Wyatt Wayne!!

I met Wyatt when he was just five days old. He made me giggle the entire time with all the funny faces he made. This boy has some character! He looks exactly like his daddy now but as I was shown, he looks exactly like his mommy when she was a baby. Such a cutie.

Everyone meet Wyatt Wayne Kessler - Born March 29th at 7:58pm 9lbs 21.5 inches. He is a big boy! Congratulations Amanda and Christian!! So happy for you both.

The entire time I have lived in Los Angeles, I have lived in or really close to Hollywood. When it was time for me to look for a new place to live, a room with a very close friend happened to open up in Santa Monica. It was the perfect situation laid at my feet to start my new journey. I have lived on the westside now for two months and I am in love! I never want to leave. Haha, I thought I would never say it but I have officially become a westsider.

Today's five things are why I love living in Santa Monica.

I get to see the ocean everyday. I can actually walk to it.
I can walk to everything I need. There is awesome pizza a half block away. Even a New Yorker said it was the best he has had.
I take yoga on the beach with dolphins swimming by.
The weather is perfect when the rest of the city is hot.
Pixel loves the dog park and all the other doggies we see on our walks.

I am really looking forward to spending spring and summer here.

Breath taking. Stunning. Beautiful.

I have fallen in love with the work of Nick Brandt. I am just blown away at most of the images that he captured. I did a little research on him to find out more of the technical side of his work. It looks like he uses film and only uses two lenses, neither of them being telephoto. He writes: "You wouldn't take a portrait of a human being from a hundred feet away and expect to capture their spirit; you'd move in close."

One day I will have a print of his on my wall but until I can afford art for $80k I will settle for his book.

Back when I was blogging everyday I would use Monday's to share a little about myself. I called it "Something about me Monday's". Since I am trying to get back in the swing of blogging everyday I thought I would bring it back so you can learn a little more about the person behind the camera.

I guess the most appropriate topic to share would be where have I been for the last 4 months. In short, I have been licking my wounds from the break up of my long relationship in which I was engaged and planning our wedding. It was hard enough to get out of bed and do my normal daily duties like eat and go to work, let alone trying to run my photography business. Instead of forcing myself to do something, I took the time to heal and to get to know myself as an individual again. Although I am no where near healed, I am finally at a place where I want to be creative. I want to get back on the ball and work towards my dream of being a full time photographer.

Ariane & Koa ::: Engaged

Ariane and Koa are big nature fans so when she asked me to do their engagement session I immediately thought of shooting it in the Kaloko forest, one of my favorite places on the the Big Island. As it turns out this is one of their favorite places too. We met up for an early shoot which gave us beautiful light. There was still dew on the ground and fog in the air. All makings of a perfect morning for a photoshoot.

These guys are naturals in front of the camera. Both have beautiful smiles and are a photogenic. It made my job easy to get so many great shots. I can not wait to see them all dressed up for their wedding in April.

Everyone meet Rae. I use to babysit her when she was 3 months old. Now she is 14 and is growing into a blue eyed beauty.

I was asked if I did any work on her eyes in post which I did not. Actually a photo of Rae on her Facebook page inspired me to take photos of her on my trip home for the holidays. The entire shoot was based around her stunning eyes.

Shelly & Shaun ::: Married

Shelly and Shaun had a wonderful little ceremony aboard the Dream on. We sailed into the sunset listening to the beautiful music of Nikhil Korula. It was a great group of people having good times and laughs. Family and friends celebrated into the night as the moon rose of the marina. It was perfect in every way. Bliss Family

Check out the little munchkin! She is too cute for words. This adorable little family holds a very special place in my heart. Sammy has been a friend of mine for close to a decade. There are not too many people I can say that about. I met Rayna not too long after the two of them fell madly in love. I don't think that there is a better match than these two for each other. Plus they are ridiculously beautiful, inside and out. Needless to say they made a gorgeous baby who is full of character, sweetness and sass. All the qualities of mommy and daddy ;)

We have actually seen these two before. Rayna was my first Pregnancy Boudoir photo shoot just 4 days before Anjali graced us with her presence.
